What You Need To Know About Vitamin C Serums

We all know that Vitamin C is great for our skin, but do you know which one is the best choice? If you are want to know more about the skin benefits of Vitamin C or how to choose the best product for your money, see this blog

Vitamin C serums are one of the most popular skincare products on the market right now, but there are several factors that you need to take into account before you purchase one for yourself. Before we go any further...

What is Vitamin C exactly?

Vitamin C or Ascorbic acid is a type of carbohydrate and is typically found as a supplement in a solution. Practitioners speak of it as being variously known as L-Ascorbic Acid, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Sodium L- Ascorbate, or ascorbic acid oxide. In respect to skin Vitamin C, it basically protects and heals the skin from damage.

Let’s look at the benefits of Vitamin C in skincare

There are so many benefits of vitamin C for your skin, it's hard to choose from boosting collagen production to fighting free radicals, Vitamin C is essential to skin health. As a small molecular weight antioxidant, it contributes to photo-protection, decreases photo-damage, and needs to be present to keep skin healthy. Vitamin C also helps with wound healing and decreasing the chance of infection, and it's also needed for adequate immune function.  Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that has many beneficial properties. It's been proven to help with everything from preventing ageing to lightening discolouration to fighting acne, it has become a popular cosmeceutical ingredient.

What is the key to making sure your Vitamin products is effective?

It’s not always easy to find the perfect Vitamin C serum. Different products have different benefits, and you should carefully consider your needs before making a purchase. The kind of bottle or dispenser, the concentration of vitamin C, and the ingredient list all contribute to the quality and effectiveness of your Serum.

Vitamin C is a delicate molecule that is easily oxidised and deactivated. To avoid this, be sure to store it in air-tight, opaque packages and keep it out of the sun and away from other sources of heat. If your product has changed colour, it is best to discard and replace it with a new one.

Jacine Drummond Cosmetic Chemist Also known as ‘The Fairy Godmother of Skin’ explains that

“L-Ascorbic acid in particular if it is in a dropper bottle is not effective within 6 days due to the air reacting with the product and making the vitamin C useless”

This is very interesting considering how many Vitamin c serums we see on the market packaged this way.

While vitamin C is considered to be more effective at higher concentrations, it does not necessarily mean your skin can tolerate or absorb it efficiently. In fact, the higher the concentration of L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), the more susceptible you are to skin irritations and barrier impairment.

Finding the right Vitamin C Serum

So how do you find the right Vitamin C that will give you the results? Let's face it you can pay up to $200+ dollars for Vitamin C so it’s only fair you are getting what the product claims it can do right?

Here are three things to look for when buying your vitamin c serum

Airless or air tight packaging: you should be looking for this type of packaging especially if it is L-Ascorbic Acid.

The type of Vitamin C: Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate and Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate are much more stable than typical L-Ascorbic Acid.

High concentrations:  High concentrations of Vitamin C will automatically cause irritation. L-Ascorbic acid as is, normally has poor penetration and it needs a high amount to get even a remote amount into the deeper layers of the skin.

Choosing a vitamin C serum is an important decision, so be sure to consider these factors before you make a final decision.
