Choosing The Best Cleanser For Dry Skin

Do you have a dry skin type?

Dry skin is a skin type and is identified as skin lacking sebum, the natural oil our skin produces. If you have dry skin, you'll know how difficult it can be to keep the skin soft, supple and hydrated. Dry skin can also be prone to irritation and sensitivity due to the environment or harsh skincare products.

The skin's lipid matrix.

Within the top layer of the epidermis lies the stratum corneum matrix that keeps the skin protected. Often referred to as the lipid barrier, it comprises three essential lipids: cholesterol, free fatty acids, and ceramides.

The lipid barrier function does the following:

Acts as a shield against the stress of the environment.

Holds moisture within the skin to maintain balance and reduce the risk of sensitivity and irritation.
Protects the skin from invading microbes.

More so than other skin types, dry skin can struggle to keep the lipid barrier intact and needs extra care, especially when cleansing, to keep the skin functioning as it should.

The importance of essential fatty acids in the skin.

The lipid layer is a permeable barrier and can become disrupted when excessively exposed to the environment. Or, when the skin is incorrectly cleansed with foaming cleansers that can strip away the natural lipids, dry skin becomes dehydrated, sensitive, and irritated.

Stay away from foaming cleansers.

Most foaming cleansers contain surfactants, and a surfactant is designed to remove oil. Often, foaming facial cleansers have a high percentage of surfactants. With little to no sebum to remove, dry skin is left feeling tight, dehydrated, and with a weakened lipid barrier susceptible to environmental damage.

How to cleanse dry skin?

When choosing a cleanser for dry skin, look for products that do not foam on the skin and are enriched with essential fatty acids.

A milk cleanser enriched with ceramides and essential fatty acids will remove dirt, makeup, and pollutants. At the same time, restoring the skin's lipid barrier keeps the skin well protected and maintains the moisture balance within the skin.

Restoring the skin's lipid matrix.

When treating dry skin, opt for milk cleansers that gently cleanse the skin without disrupting the lipid matrix and restore and maintain the skin's natural balance.
